Inset

Load the object or image you want to apply the inset on a new layer(layer 1).

Load a selection around the image or object then expand the selection by 3 pixels. Do not lose this selection.

With the selection still loaded, go the layer directly below the current layer(layer 1) and click on the button and make a new layer(layer 2) between them.

Go to the new layer(layer 2) and fill the selection with black.

Deselect and then apply FILTER>BLUR>GUASSIAN BLUR. The amount of blur I used for this tutorial is 1.9 but you can apply your own settings and experiment.

Displace the contents of the layer by 1 pixel up and 1 pixel right

To produce the highlight of the inset on the lower left section, make a duplicate of layer 2 and inverse the color of the contents of the layer 2 copy. Displace the the contents of layer 2 copy 4 pixels down and 4 pixels left.

The layer with the blurred black image should be on the top of the layer white the blurred white image. Switch the layer positions if its not right.
